How To Know When It’s Time For Your Senior Loved One To Move Or Receive More Care

If you have an aging loved one, you may find yourself wondering what types of event or other shifts may be signs of them needing to move spaces or receive more care! Here are some of our suggested signs to be on the lookout for that may signal it is time to move or receive more care:

1. When they are no longer able to safely or comfortably live in their current living situation.

Do things look different than they previously have? Are they able to clean and care for their space? Are lights left on? Are there new occurrences of mold or rust? How dusty is the home? Are woods oiled or starting to crack? Are gutters clear of debris?

Are there any prominent safety issues in their living space? Is the stove left on unintentionally, or are there flammable items by the stove? Are doors properly closed and locked? Are candles left burning? Are there clear walking paths?

2. Physical or cognitive limitations.

Are there evident mobility issues? Are they having a harder time navigating stairs? Is a cane or a walker needed for movement?

How is the self-care of the elder loved one? Are they able to consistently shower or bathe? Can they remember to? Do they maintain their nails and hair? Are the clothes they wear clean or stained?

Are they able to remember where they are, who others are, and who they are? Can they orient themselves to the present time?

3. The desire for another type of living arrangement.

One of the most important factors can be their preference! Does living at home feeling lonely or isolating for them? Do they want to live in a social community, or with others, and currently don’t?

Would they like more stimulation and activities? Would they prefer to have someone else make their meals, or do they want company to eat with them?

If you notice that your senior loved one is ready for more care, it could be time to either bring more care into their home or to move them somewhere that has more care readily available!
